About Caroline

With a father who spent most of his working life playing French horn in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Caroline has had music in her bones from the very beginning, having learnt the Suzuki method from age ten, exploring the piano and clarinet and eventually finding her way to the violin.

Caroline's love of improvisation and free-form playing inspired her interest in the exotic and inspired her long journey into the world of Celtic music. This eventually led her to her first major professional stint as violinist in the acclaimed folk trio, Jigzag.

Along with Greg Bryce and Liz Frencham, Caroline toured both nationally and internationally for over a decade and Jigzag became a favourite on the Australian festival scene, performing their intoxicating mix of Celtic tunes and original songs, written by all three members.

Between 1999 and 2010, Jigzag produced five albums and a live DVD, toured Australia consistently playing all the major folk festivals as well as performing pub and club gigs great and small. In 2006 Jigzag were voted Australian Folk Band of the Year. They were also recognised overseas, performing in the UK, Canada, New Zealand, Denmark and New Caledonia.

It was during her years with Jigzag that Caroline's talent as a singer/songwriter emerged, and her vocals are heard more frequently on the later of Jigzag's recordings.  In 2010 the trio decided to take an extended break from touring and this became the perfect opportunity for Caroline to develop her song writing and vocal pursuits.

This period coincided with an opportunity to play violin with Angus and Julia Stone, and in 2010 she accompanied them on their European tour, then afterwards their 2011 Australian Summer Festivals tour, including the Big Day Out. She simultaneously began penning what has now become her 13 track Solo Album, The Time Garden.

Caroline recorded the tracks during the Winter of 2011, playing violin and guitar as well as singing her original songs. She is joined by some of her finest musician friends and together they have created a sumptuous and diverse album with a clean musicality that’s been beautifully produced. The result is, as the name suggests, an exploration of life's themes; love, loss and betrayal and the healing that comes with the passing of time.

The Time Garden is in one moment whimsical and enchanting and in another bold and outspoken. From sweet lullabies to intense ballads, these songs are an honest expression of a soul searching to know itself better and a heart on its journey to healing.
